Motivation vs. Incentive

We often find it difficult to distinguish words that give us the impression of having the same meaning, but are not synonymous. Examples of this are motivation and incentive.

That's why, in this post, I'm going to explain the difference between incentive and motivation!

An incentive is something that comes from outside, it's a prize, something you can earn if you do a certain task or fulfil your obligation with excellence. Examples of incentives could be: a pay rise, a promotion or a contract.

Motivation, on the other hand, is something that comes from within, born of the desire to achieve, the pleasure of reaching the planned result and the satisfaction of reaching a goal.

In an incentive, what drives a person is the possibility of gaining something in the short or medium term, i.e. obtaining a reward.

Incentives are ephemeral and momentary, and we soon forget them. Motivation is long-lasting and remains engraved in the memory, in the subconscious of the individual. Motivation aims to make people realise that certain actions will really add value to their lives.

Have you ever stopped to think that you might be waiting for something to happen or for someone to push you to change? You shouldn't rely solely on external incentives to take action in various areas of your life.

You need to take care of and develop your personal motivation! Be aware of how to self-motivate. Believe in your potential and abilities, have clear goals and determination.

To find motivation, you need to understand what your needs and goals really are, and define the actions that will lead you towards success and the fulfilment of your dreams.
