The Force of Habit
2024/06/25

Have you ever stopped to think about what is or isn't working in your life? And have you ever imagined that this might be happening because of the strength of your habits? This reflection is necessary in order to understand what our repetitive behaviours are, based on acquired habits, and what they mean for our results, whether positive or negative. Over time, throughout our lives, we build up a set of habits that affect everything around us. These can be stimulating habits, or even restrictions that we impose on ourselves. Restrictive habits are those that trap us in a supposed comfort zone and prevent us from expressing our full potential. These habits become ingrained in our behaviour, even unconsciously, and come to determine what we think about what we can and can't do, and even those things we refuse to even try. If we allow these habits to govern our actions, we'll get stuck in a life we don't want. So review your habits, find out which ones you should keep and which ones you should eliminate. Because, as much as other people want to remove or add behaviours to your life, only you will know and feel which habits you need to exclude or add to your life. Constant practice creates habit and is the great secret to realising the changes we want, both in our personal and professional lives. ‘Habits, scientists say, arise because the brain is always looking for ways to save effort,’ journalist Charles Duhigg once said. So we shouldn't give in to the negative comfort offered by bad habits. We must cultivate positive habits if we want to have a better quality of life and more energy to fight for the fulfilment of our goals. According to Dr. Ícaro Alcântara, author of the book ‘11 habits in 11 weeks’, whatever your goals, it is essential to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle so that, over time, well-being becomes a constant companion. That way, we'll have the direction, energy and disposition to pursue what really interests us in life. |
